Non-fiction TV show Shark Tank India’s season 1 is over. Whether it be the business aspirants alluring the Sharks with their innovative ideas or the Sharks turning into pop culture icons, Shark Tank India has made a remarkable mark in the history of Indian television, being the first business reality show on a Hindi GEC. Encouraging the notion of ‘Badalte Bharat ki Nayi Soch’, Shark Tank India became the wind beneath the wings of many individuals who dared to dream and paved their way to becoming successful entrepreneurs. While the show celebrated entrepreneurship from all walks of life, here’s a look at 5 extraordinary business ideas from the show.
The first crorepatis of Shark Tank India, Nagpur based Jayesh Sahebrao Tope, Pritesh Prakash Mahajan and Pushkaraj Narendra Salunke, founded Revamp Motors Pvt Ltd, with a mission to empower India’s hustlers while accelerating the transition to a zero-emission society. Identifying the rising popularity and benefits of EVs, the Nashik-based start-up launched India’s first EV utility bike – Revamp Mitra to develop vehicles that are not limited to transportation but can be used by users according to their needs and requirements within a decent budget. Designed for micro-entrepreneurs, these electric bikes build on modular utility platforms come in multiple variants and multiple usages that can take up to 200kgs of weight. Their pitch created a wave of excitement amongst the Sharks – Aman Gupta and Anupam Mittal and got an investment of 1 crore for 1.5% equity.
Just like Shark Tank India, one of the ventures that has and continue to be the wind beneath the wings of the country’s young minds is AAS Vidyalaya, an educational start-up that aims to take the school to those children who are not able to go to school for any reason. It is observed that out of 100 only about 30 students pass out of class 10 and the other 70 either drop out or are unable to attend school due to many personal and socio-economic reasons. The problem has been observed all over the country but mainly in smaller towns and rural areas. To solve this age-old problem with a smart solution, Vikas and Leena Kakwani started AAS Vidyalaya – Anytime Anywhere School, giving power in the hand of every child to unlock their potential through holistic learning and guidance. Being the change markers of today, the ed-tech startup is solving the problem of availability and accessibility of good quality education by bringing the school to those children who are not able to go to school. Ensuring every child is educated, AAS Vidyalaya came up with a unique concept of ‘AAS Vidyalaya Education Cafes’ in rural areas. These cafes are equipped with TABs and students can walk in any time of the day, log in with their registered ID & password, and study for as long as they desire. Joining the husband-wife duo’s strong and heartwarming vision of making a huge difference in society, Sharks Peyush Bansal, Namita Thapar, and Ashneer Grover gave them an investment of 1.5 crores for 15% equity.
While it’s easy to impress the Sharks with revolutionary and never-seen-before products, only one product left them teary-eyed! Grabbing a deal from all the five sharks, Dehradun based Sunfox Technologies presented their product, ‘Spandan’ which is a pocket-size portable ECG monitor! The product got a deal from Peyush Bansal, Namita Thapar, Ghazal Alagh, Vineeta Singh, and Anupam Mittal who invested 1 crore for 6% equity! Around 20 lakh people lose their life due to cardiovascular diseases owing to the non-availability of monitoring equipment, lack of routine heart check-ups, and no early diagnosis. And, the scenario is worse in remote areas. Having faced the loss of a dear one due to cardiac abnormality, made the founders of Sunfox Technologies realize the importance of having a device that could detect heart abnormalities at an early stage. With this vision, Rajat Jain, Nitin Chandola, Sabit Rawat, and Saurabh Badola developed ‘Spandan’, an affordable pocket-sized home testing ECG monitor that detects heart ailments with a 99.7% accuracy. Equipped with smart algorithms to interpret abnormalities, Spandan gives results in an easy-to-understand language on a smartphone. Sunfox Technologies aims to reach out to every Indian household and save millions of lives with early detection.
A Mumbai-based organization, The Renal Project with a pan-India outlook to help the country and the affected patients cope with the dearth in easy availability of kidney care impressed one and all on Shark Tank India. The Founder Shashank M Modhia and Jitesh Pednekar Operations Head walked with their heads held high with an investment of 1 Crore from Sharks Namita Thapar and Aman Gupta. The Renal project started with a vision that no one should need to travel long distances to get the life-sustaining therapy of dialysis every 2-3 days, spending time and energy traveling, increasing risk of infection, fatigue, and stress. With its scalable size of canters ranging from 2 to 40-bed canters, the brand collaborates with medical facilities to ‘fill the gap’ where there is the unavailability of dialysis centres.
One of the most memorable pitches on Shark Tank India would be the pitch of founders Sanskriti Dawle, Aman Srivastava, Saif Shaikh, and Dilip Ramesh from Thinkerbell Labs who brought to the show their product ‘ANNIE’. An outstanding business prototype that surely has a massive potential of putting India on the global map. This revolutionary and one-of-a-kind product, one of the firsts in India, is a device for visually impaired kids where they can learn the curriculum in Braille by themselves in any language suited to them. The added attractive factor to their pitch was the wonder kid Prathmesh Sinha, a visually impaired child, who used the product in front of the Sharks to show its efficiency. They got themselves a deal from Sharks Peyush Bansal, Namita Thapar, and Anupam Mittal who invested 1.05 crore at 3% equity. The founders saw that India had a huge gap when it came to Braille literacy and wanted to do something about it, hence founded ANNIE, named after the famous author and disability rights activist Helen Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan. The device aims at making Braille learning an independent activity where the visually impaired do not have to take help from external factors to learn. According to the pitchers, as per WHO, everyone out of a thousand children in the world need Annie, and so the “Indian made” product has also visioned of reaching out of the borders of its country of origin.
